Adrian Daintrey 1902-1988
Adrian Daintrey 1902-1988 was a painter, illustrator and writer born in London and educated at Chaterhouse. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art 1920-24 but found the regime unsympathetic. Instead he preferred the company of Augustus John and his circle. He gathered a wide circle of friends including Nina Hamnett, Rex Whistler, Matthew Smith, Alvaro Guevara and Anthony Powell. He continued his studies in Paris and then became art master at Dean Close School, Cheltenham. In 1928 he shared an exhibition with Paul Nash at Dorothy Warren's Gallery. During World War II he served abroad and was involved in camouflage work. After the war he showed his work in his studio and was art critic for 'Punch'1953-61. Daintrey taught part-time and became a librarian. The British Museum and Imperial War Museum hold his work. |
