Gillian attended St Martins School of Art 1945-1951 where she studied painting and wood engraving under Gertrude Hermes and Clifford Webb. 
She worked as an art teacher for the I.L
.E.A. and also worked as a freelance textile designer, using designs based on mono-prints. She started etching and practised as a printmaker, selling work to the National Museum of Wales and the National Library of Wales. She also sold work in London galleries including the Royal Academy summer exhibitions. She was married to James Stroudley, painter and lecturer at St. Martins School of Art.
